ISLAMABAD: An Accountability Court (AC) on Friday granted a seven-day physical remand of Additional Secretary Wafaqi Mohtasib to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a mega corruption case.
AC Judge Muhammad Bashir heard the case against accused Arshad Farooq – former head of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP)– who wasproduced before the court by the NAB.
The bureau officials informed the court that Farooq had misused his powers and caused Rs 970 million loss to the nationalexchequer.The official went on to say that the accused – as DRAP chief executive – illegally permitted various drugs manufacturingcompanies to increase the medicine prices causing an extra burden onthe citizens’ pocket.
The medicine companies had earned billions of rupees illegallydue to this move, the official said.The NAB official requested the court to grant a physical remand of theaccused for recovery of the embezzled amount and further investigation of the case.
After hearing the arguments, the court granted the seven-dayphysical remand of the accused. However, it is pertinent to mention here that a divisional bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) onThursday had rejected the pre-arrest bail plea of the above mentioned accused.
